On Identity Spectrums

By Jessica Mahmoud on September 30, 2016

On this blog, I’ve talked a lot about gender identities and queer identities, and while I’ve written on fluidity, I never really addressed the fact that a lot of these identities run on spectrum, rather than fixed point. I’ve made an diagram to show you what I mean.

The spectrums I’ve mentioned here are sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, romantic orientation, and sexuality. Check it out:

Additionally, here‘s a site you can use to chart your own spectrums, and here and here are two videos about spectrums by Ashley Mardell.

I hope this helps you think about how your multifaceted identities don’t have to be defined at one point and also recognize that they can always change!
